It's also baked into Samsung smartphones TVs, tablets and tablets – and some refrigerators. That may be enough to warrant it for some, particularly when you own multiple Samsung products. The SmartThings app is a bit polished and well rounded and comes with a 'if x then y' automation section that performs surprisingly well. You can set things up like alarms that go off when sensors for water leaks detect flooding, or turning on the lights when your phone senses you're at home. It can also control your refrigerator if you link it to a smart plug, though we've had mixed results with that. You'll need a hub to use SmartThings, and it's not expensive. Samsung has a range of models, including the SmartThings Station, which you can attach to your router, and is used as a nightlight. There's a lower-cost SmartThings hub dongle that supports Z-Wave, Zigbee and Thread. Once you've connected your smart refrigerator to your phone and hub, it is very simple to use. One major change is that you can now set different profiles for every family member so that they can personalise the information and apps they have access to. It's still not quite as effective as having Alexa integration integrated into your fridge, but it's an improvement on the previous model. Besides its entertainment and grocery management capabilities, Family Hub also acts as controller for Samsung's SmartThings platform. It can be integrated into Matter-compatible devices, such as lights or plugs and can be used with the touchscreen to control them as well. Samsung's fridge has been in use for a few years now and, even though it provides a decent amount of functionality, the touchscreen smarts don't really stand out as an essential feature for the majority of people. These are more of a fun, semi-frivolous addition than anything else. This could change with the release of more software updates, but for the moment these models are the best for those who wish to have the most comprehensive connected refrigerator that is possible. If you're not among them, you can opt for a less expensive model that doesn't have the Family Hub to save some money. If you have many smart home appliances that you want to control from one screen, or you love the idea of a refrigerator with a giant touchscreen, it could be worth the money.
